What do you do in your music career?
I work as an educational administator for an orchestra, and my job is doing any practical administration for any outreach projects the orchestra is doing. Some of this work is bringing workshops like 'Meet a Musician' to schools to inspire young children to start learning an instrument, or organising orchestral schemes for young musicians to offer them professional experience early in there career. Aside from this job I do a little bit of music tutoring as well!
What's your favourite thing about being a musician?
I really like being able to do a lot of community based music projects and volunteering for creative schemes. I believe that getting involved in music can really enhance someone's wellbeing and social life and so it's really rewarding to be able to use the skills I've gained as a musician to help others.
Which Musica Kirklees groups were you in?
I had string lessons with Musica from the age of 5, and then joined Musica Colne Valley, working my way through their Junior, Intermediate and Senior string ensembles. I then joined Musica Youth Strings and Musica Youth Orchestra when I was 10. Also, through Musica, I started a student-led String Trio that enjoyed success performing at the Music for Youth festival and for the Mayor of Manchester!
What is your favourite memory from Musica Kirklees?
This is such a hard question because I was lucky enough to go on four international tours with the Musica Youth Orchestra, I loved having the oppurtunity to play in some amazing venues like churches, town squares, Disneyland and a converted stable in Czechia! As an honorable mention, I'll never forget kayaking down a river in the south of France with the whole of the Youth Orchestra!
Aside from the tours, I've enjoyed performing at the Royal Albert Hall with Musica for so many exciting projects. I feel so lucky to have gained these unique experiences with the support of some wonderful, inspiring teachers, who have really encouraged me to flourish as a musician.
Do you have any advice for the musicians of Musica Kirklees?
I would say get involved in as many ensembles as you can, it's a wonderful oppurtunity to meet like minded people, gain amazing performance oppurtunities, and be a part of some really exciting creative projects. I was so nervous when I started, but being able to work on something together as an ensemble is the best part of being a musician in my opinion. Secondly, persevere! There might be times where you feel like quititng, but having the ability to play an instrument is an amazing skill and something that you'll never regret
