What do you do in your music career?
I'm a flautist, and just finished my Master of Performance at the Royal College of Music. I'd love to make the majority of my career in the future playing in an orchestra, so I'm currently auditioning around the country and abroad! I also teach the flute to private pupils which I really enjoy. Also, I bring music workshops to schools, and am currently working with students in an SEND school. I'm really enjoying this work making different kinds of music, and it pushes me to improvise and work as a musician in a different way that I'm used to.
What's your favourite thing about being a musician?
My favourite thing about working in music is the people! Musicians are such a supportive, creative, and collaborative community - some of my strongest friends are made through music, even those I met years ago from my time in Musica Youth Orchestra!
Which Musica Kirklees groups were you in?
I was a member of Musica Holme Valley, working through Junior, Intermediate and Senior Wind Band on flute. I also had whole class brass lessons in primary school!
When I was 12 I joined the Musica Youth Orchestra, and I think going to the youth orchestra was one of the things that made me want to pursue a career in music.
What is your favourite memory from Musica Kirklees?
I was really lucky to go on four of the international tours with the Musica Youth Orchestra. My favourite trip was to Lake Garda, spending time with some of my closest friends and performing amazing music.
What was your biggest takeaway from your time at Musica Kirklees?
I learnt a lot about ensemble playing from my time at Musica. When I first started at the Junior Wind Band I hadn't played with other musicians before, so I learnt a lot about how to play as part of a group. Also, when I was in the Youth Orchestra, we got to perform some of the pieces that I was studying as part of my music GCSE/A levels, which was really exciting and gave me a deeper understanding of the music.
Do you have any advice for the musicians of Musica Kirklees?
I would say get involved in every way that you can! Collaborate and make music with as many different people as possible. As much as practising individually is fun and important, I've learnt a lot from both listening to others perform and practising with other musicians
