Rohan Harron

Hi, I'm Rohan, a violinist and composer studying at the Royal Irish Academy of Music
Read below to learn more about Rohan and their time at Musica Kirklees

What does a typical week look like in your life?

Every week varies! The majority of my week is spent at university (RIAM) studying a mix of academic, practical and performance classes, and practising and composing in my free time. We occasionally have workshops and masterclasses, and there are of course always lots of concerts and events in the diary! Also, I spend my free time teaching strings alongside my university studies.

What's your favourite thing about being a musician?

My favourite thing about working in music is probably the variety of the job! I love to meet so many people from different walks of life and get to make music with them, whether that be through teaching, performing or something else

Which Musica Kirklees groups were you in?

I first joined Musica Colne Valley when I was 7 in the Junior String Ensemble, and then worked up through Intermediate and Senior Ensembles. I then joined Musica Youth Orchestra and Musica Youth Strings, and enjoyed leading the youth orchestra for a few years. I was also part of Musica Youth Jazz and Musica Soul Band for a few years on piano/keys.

What did you learn from your time with Musica

I learnt so much from my time with Musica, not just from the teachers but also from everyone around me. It was great to meet and be introduced to so many new people through music, many of which I'm still friends with and that I wouldn't have met otherwise.

What is your favourite memory from Musica Kirklees?

It's hard to just pick one memory from so many, but the tour to Prague with Musica Youth Orchestra was definitely a favourite. Also, performing at the Royal Albert Hall a few times as part of the Music for Youth proms was an amazing and memorable experience

Do you have any advice for the musicians of Musica Kirklees?

Take every opportunity you can and take risks! When I was at Musica I pushed myself to join some ensembles on my second instrument, and although I might not have been as confident playing in that genre/setting, I'm so glad that I pushed myself to do it and got to do it in such a welcoming environment
