Song for the Prom at the Royal Albert Hall Competition

On Tuesday, November 17, 2020, Musica Kirklees will be forming the massed ensemble for the Music for Youth 50th Birthday Prom at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall.

‘The Big 5 – 0’ will be a medley of iconic songs spanning half a century and will be scored for massed choirs and symphonic pops orchestra. To look ahead to the next 50 years, we invite young composers (Key Stage 2 – 5) to write an introduction, verse and chorus of original music to form part of the medley.

The song should be written for voice with accompaniment (piano or guitar/ukulele). A panel of musicians will listen to each entry and select the most suitable song. The song will then be orchestrated, with input from the young composer, for the larger symphony orchestra and choir. School teachers and Musica Kirklees teachers can provide guidance to the young composers throughout the process. The selected song writer will receive 4 complimentary tickets for the concert on 17th November at The Royal Albert Hall.

Deadlines
Deadline for submission: Monday, March 30, 2020
The winning song will be contacted on or before April 20, 2020

How to Submit Your Song
Students / schools need to submit the following to enter the competition:
• An audio recording or video
• A lead / lyric sheet or musical score
By email to [email protected] by the deadline of Monday, March 30, 2020.  If the file is too big, please send a download link such as WeTransfer.  Please include the name of the composer, age and the Kirklees School attended. We are unable to accept entries from non-Kirklees schools/colleges.

Competition Guidelines
We are looking for original songs composed and performed by individuals or small groups. Songs can be accompanied by piano/keyboard or guitar/ukulele.
Songs should also:
• Be approximately one minute in length (if your song is longer, we will only be able to use a smaller section of it)
• Contain a short introduction, a verse and a chorus
• Have a positive message, tell a story or ideas for the future
Some pointers to consider:
• Catchy lyrics • A memorable riff/hook/ostinato • Imaginative harmonies/chords • A strong bassline • Backing vocals to accompany the main vocal line
