Spring 2022
Newsome Rocks! was a 7 week project working with Newsome High School focusing on young people who had no musical background and experience many barriers to accessing musical opportunities.
Three Musica Kirklees teachers delivered the project engaging with reflective practice, and we had a close working relationship with Senior Leadership Team at Newsome High School who were also completing their own evidence-based report on the impact and outcomes of the project.
The 90 minute weekly workshops were split between large focused rehearsals and smaller sectional sessions with year 8 students. The project concluded with a massed performance of ‘Seven Nation Army’ by the White Stripes and a song written by the pupils themselves, on guitars, bass guitar, drums, keyboard and voice.
